When the Odds Are In Your Favor and Still, You Lose

If a surgeon or oncologist told your husband that the five-year survival rate for someone with his particular cancer is 98 percent, treatment you would probably feel pretty good about the future.

That’s where I found myself when, medicine after my first husband’s initial early stage/low grade bladder cancer diagnosis in 2011, help we believed he was in the clear. The odds in his favor were 98 percent. A doctor had used the word “cured.” We went on with our lives and pretty much forgot about cancer.

But what if your husband is in that unlucky two percent? And, that fewer than three years later, the same cancer killed him?
